  6.     Most expert opinion in the U.S. Navy refused to believe the claim of Ed Heinemann, chief 
  7. engineer of what was then Douglas El Segundo,that he could build a jet attack bomber weighing
  8. half the 30,000lbs specified by the Navy. The first Skyhawk, nicknamed "Heinemann's Hot Rod",
  9. not only flew but gained a world record by flying a 500km circuit at over 695mph.The later 
  10. versions of this aircraft did approach the 30,000lb weight ceiling,but only because the basic 
  11. design had been improved with more powerful engines, increased fuel capacity, and a much heavier 
  12. weapons load.The wing was made as a single unit, forming an integral fuel tank and so small 
  13. it did not need to fold.The F model introduced the dorsal hump containing additional avionics.
